Medieval Village Squeezed Between Rocks
This Flinstone-like village, called Monsanto, is actually located in Portugal, southeast of Serra de Estrela, which is the highest mountain range in continental Portugal. It is situated on the side of mountain Monsanto (Mons Sanctus) and is popularly known as “the most Portuguese village in Portugal”.
The charm rests in spectacular landscapes, small houses and tiny streets squeezed between enormous rocks. The appearance of Monsanto hasn’t changed in centuries – since 1938, the building restrictions allowed it to remain a living museum.
Just try to imagine the atmosphere of a village, whose history recalls the ice-ages. Though it’s not easy to reach Monsanto by public transport, it is really worth a try.
